Meet SEJ member Tanka Dhakal! Tanka is an independent journalist based in Kathmandu, Nepal. He grew up in a village and feels a strong connection to the stories and issues of common people. He reports in both Nepali and English on the environment, climate change, science, health, labor migrations and marginalized communities (including LGBTQIA+) and the intersections among them, with real-world experience and scientific analyses. Tanka is currently an M.S. student with a concentration in Investigative Journalism and is a Fellow at the Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism at Indiana University. He holds an M.A. in Rural Development, a B.A. in Sociology and Rural Development, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. His work has been published in NPR, The Third Pole [Dialogue Earth], IPS News, ICIJ, The Guardian, NBC News, ARIJ, Asia Democracy Chronicles, Think Global Health, Wisconsin Watch, Blue Dot Living, NIMJN, Himal Khabar, Deshsanchar, Online Khabar and Nepali Times, among others. He is also a member of NEFEJ (Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists).
