On this World Press Freedom Day, we're thrilled to introduce you to brand new SEJ member — Macy Berendsen! Macy won first place in our inaugural Student Press Freedom Day Op-Ed Contest for her article, "The Mafia To-Do List: Garbage Collection," which will be published in an upcoming SEJournal.
Macy is currently studying journalism and English at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. She is a member of her school's news organization TommieMedia, working as a reporter, columnist and podcaster. Macy is originally from Appleton, Wis., but hopes her future career will take her abroad. She studied in Rome, Italy in fall of 2021 and hopes to go back soon! In the future, Macy hopes to use her journalism and English degree to work in the literary and publishing industry, as well as covering issues important to her, such as climate change, gun reform and women’s rights. One of her biggest aspirations is to work as a book critic at The New York Times. Macy also hopes to one day write a novel of her own. Join Macy in the SEJ community today!
