Meet SEJ member Luis Joel Méndez González! Luis is a climate change and post–disaster recovery reporter for Puerto Rico's Center for Investigative Journalism (English website) through Report for America. He is a passionate, data-driven, investigative and multimedia reporter with an interest in stories about Puerto Rico, where he was born and raised. Framing big issues such as the science behind the vulnerability of Puerto Rico, this bilingual multimedia reporter investigates public policies regarding climate change, government preparedness, coastal erosion, infrastructure and sea level rise, among other topics, integrating a regional cross-border reporting perspective. His commitment has led him to work and collaborate with award-winning investigative teams, such as the Miami Herald's I-Team, and El Nuevo Dia Facts & Investigative Unit. He graduated with a Masters in Information Design and Data Visualization from Northeastern University. Luis was the General At-Large Officer at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Board of Directors and a member of Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE).
When asked if he recommends SEJ membership to his colleagues, Luis said, "SEJ is a 'must' for any reporter who wants to dive into environmental journalism. In these hectic times, it is crucial to have a strong network that can help you leverage your reporting on the ongoing climate crisis." Join us — apply for SEJ membership.
