Meet SEJ member and volunteer Christy George! Christy is a print reporter-turned public television political reporter-turned public radio environment reporter-turned freelance editor. She began her journalism career in Boston, covering noise and air pollution at Logan Airport for a free biweekly. She segued into radio, then TV, and spent a glorious sabbatical year at Stanford University as a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow. Eventually she moved West to Portland. These days, she edits public radio reporters across the West, and is working on the second draft of her first novel.
Christy was drafted into SEJ volunteerism early. SEJ needed someone to chair the 2001 conference in Portland, Oregon, where she'd just moved. The conference started just days after the 9/11 attacks, but it was a rousing success. And she was hooked. SEJ staff convinced her to run for the board, where she stayed for six terms, including two years as president. Her proudest accomplishments as president were launching the Fund for Environmental Journalism and coining the phrase "The environment is the story of the 21st Century." After co-chairing the #SEJ2020 virtual conference, Christy looks forward to co-chairing #SEJ2023 in person in Boise with Tom Michael, general manager of Boise State Public Radio. After all, she says, "Oregon is Idaho-adjacent!"

When asked why she volunteers for SEJ, Christy said "I got tremendous satisfaction giving back to a group that's given me so much. And I learned a huge amount that helped me in my day job. It was such a blast that I'm doing it again in Boise next year." Become an SEJ volunteer today!
