Meet SEJ member Amy Martin! Amy is the founder and executive producer of Threshold, a Peabody Award-winning podcast about human relationships with the natural world. Each season takes a deep dive into one pressing environmental story, exploring it through the intersections of science, politics, culture and environmental justice. Threshold has just released its fourth season, called "Time to 1.5." Amy said, "On paper, the world has agreed to limit global heating to 1.5º C over pre-industrial levels. In reality, we are not on track to meet that goal. But the window is not yet fully closed. If we take decisive action this decade, we may still be able to prevent warming beyond 1.5º C. So…will we? That's the question facing every person alive right now, and the question driving the latest season of Threshold."
In addition to Threshold, Amy's work has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, PRI's The World, Reveal, Here and Now, and other national outlets. She's given presentations at the Environmental Film Festival in The Nation's Capital, the International Wildlife Film Festival, the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø, Norway, on the TEDx stage and in various universities around the country. In 2016, Amy was selected for the Scripps Fellowship in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder. This fellowship, along with support from SEJ, helped her launch season one of Threshold, which traces the history of the American bison and its interconnectedness with violence, resistance and our complicated relationship with conservation. Threshold has since won a national Edward R. Murrow Award, a Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists and a Peabody.
When asked how SEJ membership makes her job easier, Amy said, "I attended my first SEJ conference in 2016, and had a wonderful experience meeting and connecting with other journalists. The connections I've made at these conferences have been long-lasting. SEJ has also helped me explore how much I enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge about podcasting, and has provided funding for two Threshold series, Threshold Season 1: 'Oh Give Me A Home,' and 'Threshold Conversations.'"
