SEJournal News: Weekly Online Publication Seeks Volunteer Editors

The “secret sauce” to the SEJournal’s success is its healthy roster of hard-working volunteer editors, each of whom helps oversee half-a-dozen of the weekly publication’s sections, covering topics such as living the freelance life or the insights gleaned from award-winning journalism.

These good folks unearth great ideas, identify talented writers and help shepherd the resulting stories to publication, as well as share insights and work through their roles on the Society of Environment Journalists’ Editorial Advisory Board.

And they do it largely because of their commitment to helping their fellow journalists and to supporting the SEJ’s mission to “strengthen the quality, reach and viability of journalism that advances public understanding of environmental issues.”

Now SEJournal is looking to give our tireless volunteers a boost and at the same time expand opportunities for others who would like to pay it forward to their fellow journalists. So we’re now significantly expanding the ranks of our volunteer editors.

 

We’re planning to add five new

co-editors. And as we search for

candidates, we’ll have diversity and

commitment to the beat in mind.

 

In the coming weeks and months, we’re planning to add five new co-editors. And as we search for candidates, we’ll have diversity and commitment to the beat in mind, not just knowledge of the subject matter. Those new to the environmental journalism beat are welcome!

The following positions are now open to volunteers:

• Co-editor, FEJ StoryLog (reports from grantees of SEJ's Fund for Environmental Journalism)
• Co-editor, Freelance Files (surviving as an independent journalist)
• Co-editors (two), EJ InSight (cutting edge of visual journalism on the environment)
• Co-editor, Inside Story (interviews with journalists creating winning work)

While the rewards are high, the work is deliberately kept to a minimum and is shared with your co-editor. That time commitment generally includes brainstorming or digging up story ideas, reaching out to writers and light editing (approximately 4-6 hours per story, twice a year for a quarterly column).

Co-editors join the masthead of the SEJournal and also are invited to take part in the SEJ’s Editorial Advisory Board, which meets online for one hour each quarter.
