AAAS Diverse Voices in Science Journalism Internship
This paid summer internship is for undergraduate students who are deeply committed to diversity and interested in pursuing journalism as a career. It takes place at the Washington, DC headquarters of the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world, under the guidance of award-winning reporters and editors. Includes travel to D.C. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the intern.

Above the Fray Fellowship
Above the Fray, a radio fellowship in conjunction with NPR, is the keynote program of the John Alexander Project. The 5-6 month fellowship is for journalists with 5-7 years' experience who are ready to report internationally. For the 2023 round, pitch an under-reported story from anywhere in the world. You'll spend about two months in the field, with additional time prepping and editing at NPR in Washington, DC.

Alfred Friendly Press Partners Fellowships
In partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism, these annual six-month opportunities include a General Fellowship for early-career professional journalists from developing countries and the TRACE Investigative Reporting Fellowship. Alicia Patterson Journalism Fellowships
The Alicia Patterson Foundation awards grants of $40,000 for twelve months and $20,000 for six months (includes covering costs of travel and research costs) to working journalists to pursue independent projects of significant interest and to write articles based on their investigations for The APF Reporter. Open only to U.S. citizens who are full-time print journalists, or to non-U.S. citizens who work full-time for U.S. print publications, either in America or abroad. Includes reporters, writers, editors and photographers. Must have five years of professional print experience, not necessarily consecutive. Full-time free-lancers are welcome. Applications are accepted beginning every June 1; early submissions are much appreciated. Winners are expected to begin their fellowships within the first three months of the calendar year. Note: An additional fellow specializing in either science or environmental journalism will be added. This fellow will be designated as a Cissy Patterson fellow, in honor of Alicia's aunt, the publisher Cissy Patterson. No special application is needed. All fellows applying for the Alicia Patterson fellowship and applications that deal with science or the environment will be considered for this additional fellowship. Science and environmental topics will continue to be awarded Alicia Patterson fellowships.

Arthur F. Burns Fellowship Program
This International Center for Journalists' program offers outstanding young media professionals (age 21-40) from the United States, Canada and Germany an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries. Open to U.S., Canadian and German journalists who are employed by a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station or news agency, and to freelancers. Applicants must have demonstrated journalistic talent and a strong interest in North American-European affairs. German language proficiency is not required, but it is encouraged. For North American fellows, a cash stipend covers living expenses during the two-month fellowship in Germany. Participants receive cash for travel expenses (or travel vouchers for transatlantic flights), and the program also pays living expenses during the orientation in Washington, D.C.

Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Media Fellowships
The Media Fellowship program of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada offers up-and-coming and established journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia, researching and preparing stories. The program aims to help Canadian journalists to become better informed about this dynamic part of the world in order to write and broadcast insightfully on Asia and the Canada-Asia relationship. The Foundation will award up to three fellowships valued at up to $10,000 each. The Media Fellowships are a component of the Foundation's Research Grants Program, funded through the proceeds of an endowment established by the Government of Canada.

The Bertha Challenge
This non-residential paid fellowship opportunity is for investigative journalists and activists to spend a year deep-diving into one pressing social justice challenge. The next Bertha Challenge will begin in Jan 2024 with a focus on disinformation and the climate crisis. The fellowships offer income for each Bertha Fellow for one year, project funding, access to a Connect Fund and more.

Bill Lane Center for the American West Media Fellowship
Stanford University's Bill Lane Center for the American West offers a single media fellowship with a $5,000 stipend for three months' work. The grant will fund a journalist illuminating crucial issues about the region. Fellowships provide opportunities for journalists working in all kinds of media — newspapers, magazines, radio, television, online, multimedia, video, film, data visualization, mapping, and books — to visit Stanford and interact with researchers, scholars, and students, while developing or working on a project of their own design to spur new coverage and understanding of the American West.

C&EN Editorial Fellow
Each year, a budding science writer gets the chance to hone his or her craft at Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, at their Washington, DC, headquarters. As a paid C&EN editorial fellow, you'll work alongside reporters, observing and participating in the process by which research findings become news. You'll get to fine-tune your ability to convey complex technical subjects to a diverse range of chemical professionals, and you’ll develop multimedia pieces to accompany the stories you write. Begins around June annually, for six months, with flexible start and end times.

Canadian Journalism Foundation Fellowships
CJF annually provides fellowship opportunities for Canadian journalists. The 2024 fellowships include the CJF Black Journalism Fellowship Program for early-career Black journalists and the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships, for early-career Indigenous journalists to explore an issue of interest while being hosted by CBC News for one month at its Indigenous Unit in Winnipeg.

Columbia Energy Journalism Fellows Program
The Energy Journalism Fellows (EJF) is a program of the Center on Global Energy Policy within Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. The program seeks to educate journalists about the various disciplines associated with the energy sector, including policy, markets, finance, climate change, technology and geopolitics. Moreover, it introduces participants to a variety of leading sources who can help inform their reporting on this vital topic. The program is free to journalists, including transportation and lodging for those who need it. The 2023 seminar takes place in person in New York City, June 20-23.

The Daily Yonder's Rural Reporting Fellowship
This paid fellowship is geared toward any emerging professional or college student eager to sharpen their journalistic craft or build a portfolio of published work, especially those who embody the growing diversity of rural America. Fellowships take place each fall, spring and summer, lasting for an initial term of 12 weeks, with the opportunity for extension depending upon the fellow’s availability and newsroom needs. Fellows are able to work from anywhere in the United States. For an in-person experience, there are offices and core staff in Whitesburg, Kentucky, Knoxville, Tennessee, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota and Roseburg, Oregon.

Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships in Journalism and Trauma
This Fellowship, a program of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, is designed for senior and mid-career journalists who wish to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, and improve reporting on violence, conflict and tragedy. Fellows attend a week-long seminar program at Columbia University in NYC, including briefings by leading experts in the trauma field and in-depth discussions with journalist colleagues. Fellowships are open to print, broadcast and online and reporters, photographers, editors and producers with at least five years of journalism experience. The next Fellowship program will be held Jul 30-Aug 5, 2024 at Columbia University in New York City.

Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellowships
The annual RJI Fellowships are for individuals or organizations with an innovative journalism project idea that could also benefit the industry. Projects might include devising new strategies or models to solve a problem, building new tools, creating a training workshop/program or building resources for journalists. The eight-month program for individuals offers a residential option at the Missouri School of Journalism (up to $100,000 stipend), plus nonresidential and institutional options ($25,000 for the latter two).

Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship
The International Center for Journalists' biennial Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship helps Latin American journalists improve their investigative reporting skills, either generally or in a specialty reporting area such as immigration, environment, science and technology or business. In 2023, the program begins with a webinar on disinformation and fact-checking best practices. Participants can then apply for a three-week, in-person study tour and newsroom attachment in the U.S.

East-West Center's Senior Journalists Seminar
Launched in 2003, the annual SJS is an immersive 22-day dialogue, study and travel program intended to enhance media coverage and elevate the public debate regarding identity and religion’s role in and resulting impact on the public sphere, specifically as it concerns U.S. relations with Muslim majority regions. Designed for print, radio, broadcast, and online journalists from the U.S. and countries with substantial Muslim populations, with minimum 10 years' experience. 2022-23 joint program: March 8-29.

Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship
U.S. journalists or editors who cover international news can apply for the Council on Foreign Relations' fellowship. Spend ten months full time in residence at CFR's headquarters in New York, engaging in sustained analysis and writing, expanding your intellectual and professional horizons, and participating in CFR's active program of meetings and events. $100,000 stipend plus travel grant.

EGU Science Journalism Fellowships
The European Geosciences Union's annual competition is open to professional journalists interested in geoscience stories. The fellowships enable reporters to follow scientists on location to report on ongoing research in the Earth, planetary or space sciences. The EGU funds innovative proposals to report on geoscientific research not yet in the public sphere. Fellows receive up to €5000 to cover expenses related to their projects.

European Journalism-Fellowships
Since 1999, several fellowships are awarded annually to conduct research at the Journalisten-Kolleg of the Freie Universitaet Berlin (Free University of Berlin). The programme enables participants to network with professional colleagues from Eastern and Western Europe and the United States and provide them with the opportunity to take a two-semester leave from their professional positions and spend a sabbatical year at the Freie Universität widening their knowledge while pursuing their research project. The programme runs October - July annually with a monthly stipend. Highly qualified journalists in either staff positions or freelance employment with more than five years of professional experience, not currently residing in Berlin, are eligible to apply for the standard fellowship; junior fellowships are also available. Grist Fellowship Program
This program is designed to provide newsroom experience for early-career journalists who have a demonstrated interest in environmental and climate journalism and media. The one-year fellowship pays $55,000, and includes health benefits and a company laptop for the duration of the fellowship. Fellows can be based anywhere in the U.S. but can work remotely if they choose. Four fellowships are available this round.

Heinrich Böll Foundation's Transatlantic Media Fellowships
Each year, the HBF usually sponsors journalists from the US, Canada and Europe for a five-day transatlantic trip to research stories relevant to the foundation’s work on various policy areas. Special consideration is given to journalists: from regional or local media outlets; from diverse backgrounds who can offer lesser-heard perspectives; and who may not otherwise have the opportunity to conduct transatlantic research. In 2023, five fellowships are offered in program areas including Energy & Climate and Transition in Agriculture, each with a €3,000 stipend and journalists must be based in Poland.

This International Center for Journalists fellowship program sends U.S. minority journalists overseas for up to two weeks to cover stories that resonate with their local communities. ICFJ brings the selected fellows to Washington, D.C., for a comprehensive orientation before travelling to the country of their choice. Costs for travel, lodging and interpreters are included. ICFJ News Corp Media Fellowship for Digital Innovation
The International Center for Journalists, News Corp and The Wall Street Journal are offering English-speaking journalists from around the world an opportunity to sharpen their digital journalism skills, as well as support to develop data- and/or digitally-driven projects. To be considered for the fellowship, journalists must participate in two half-day webinars in April and receive one of five news innovation grants.

IWMF Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship
This International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) fellowship gives academic and professional opportunities to advance the reporting skills of women and nonbinary journalists from any country who focus on human rights and social justice. During this seven-month fellowship, the selected journalist will have the chance to complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and participate in internships with media outlets including The Boston Globe and The New York Times.

Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources
IJNR is an educational organization that promotes higher standards of news coverage of issues of the environment, natural resources, economic development and public health through expedition-style programs of learning and mentoring for journalists. IJNR provides field experiences at significant sites with expert speakers, so that journalists can gain a deeper understanding of the context of these complex issues. IJNR awards expenses-paid fellowships to working reporters, photojournalists, writers, editors and producers, including some independent and freelance journalists. In addition, some fellowships are awarded to students enrolled in professional programs of journalism and the environmental sciences.

Jefferson Fellowships for Journalists
Founded by the East-West Center in 1967, the Jefferson Fellowships promote better public understanding of the United States and Asia and Pacific through one week of dialogue with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center in Hawaii, followed by a two-week study tour to cities in Asia or the U.S. Open to working print, broadcast, and online journalists from the U.S. and Asia Pacific. The East-West Center believes Asia-connected fellowships are becoming increasingly important for American journalists. The Jefferson Fellowships are supported by a grant from The Freeman Foundation.

Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism
The annual Kiplinger Fellowship, located within the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University, has transitioned from teaching digital media skills to focusing on the reporting of the most pressing issues of our time. Starting with the 2022 class, each year Kiplinger welcomes a distinct group of journalists from specialized fields of reporting as its fellows. Utilizing top trainers and experts in the field, it will prepare the journalists to more fully understand these topics to enhance their coverage. The first fellowship (2022) focused on climate change, the 2023 fellowship focused on Covering Political Discourse and Saving Democracy; 2024 is on Immigration and Migration. In coming years, the fellowship will address social justice, global pandemics, wealth inequities and poverty, human trafficking and opioid abuse.

Knight International Journalism Fellowships
The purpose of the Fellowships program is to improve the quality and free flow of news in the public interest around the world. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the year-long program sends international media professionals to countries where there are opportunities to promote reliable, insightful journalism that holds officials accountable. The non-profit International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) administers the Knight International Journalism Fellowships. Fellows build skills and enhance the standards of independent media in these key regions: Asia/Pacific, Eurasia/Former Soviet Union, Latin America, Middle East/North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Candidates must be fluent in the language of the region where they are deployed and should have at least 10 years' experience in journalism or related fields such as media-business management. Fellowships are open to any nationality for assignments of up to a year. The program may create Fellowships designed to take advantage of the skills of qualified applicants or to respond to specific local needs identified by the Fellowship candidate or local partner (including environment related).

Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford
Based at Stanford University in Northern California, the Knight Fellowships support diverse journalists from around the world who are creating solutions to journalism’s most urgent problems. Fellows take classes from mid-September to mid-June in any area of Stanford that interests them. Open to reporters, editors and anchors; photographers, producers and news directors; editorial cartoonists and web-site gurus; and more. Includes Stanford tuition and stipend of $95,000 plus supplements for housing, child care, health insurance and books. Also open to spouses and partners of fellows.

Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at MIT
Mid-career US journalists with a minimum of three years' experience in reporting science, medicine, environment or technology for the public are selected for an academic year at MIT, attending courses and participating in weekly seminars with top researchers. Applicants must be full-time reporters, writers, editors, producers, illustrators, filmmakers, or photojournalists, either freelance or on staff. This includes work for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and digital media. There are no educational prerequisites. Professionals working in public information, public relations, the trade press, government or academia are not eligible. $85,000 stipend, help with relocation and other benefits, including basic health insurance for each fellow and their family.

Knight-Wallace Reporting Fellowships
Each year the Knight-Wallace Fellowships at the University of Michigan summon journalists to think boldly about their craft and enhance their skills to meet the needs of a changing industry. Full-time journalists (or those with the majority of their work in journalism) with five years' experience, currently working in any media, may apply for the in-person academic year Fellowships, designed to broaden perspectives, nurture intellectual growth and inspire personal transformation. $85,000 stipend.

Korea-U.S. Journalists Exchange
This annual exchange is co-sponsored by the East-West Center, Korea Press Foundation and Pacific Century Institute to increase public understanding of the two countries and their relationship. The program sends six to eight Korean journalists to the United States and six to eight U.S. journalists to South Korea to meet with government and business leaders, academics, non-governmental organizations and other members of the community. Open to working print, online and broadcast journalists in the U.S. and Korea with a minimum of five years' experience.

Logan Nonfiction Program Fellowships
The Logan program at the Carey Institute for Global Good in New York accepts applications from writers, documentary filmmakers, photojournalists, podcasters and multimedia reporters currently at work on a longform project for its fellowships. The program seeks to assemble a diverse and inclusive community of fellows working on socially relevant political, health, environmental, human rights and justice topics. Fellows are provided lodging, meals, workspace, professional guidance and community plus a travel stipend.

MacDowell Fellowship
MacDowell in New Hampshire, which provides time and space for artists to work on creative projects, has expanded its support for journalists by providing additional residencies and project funding of up to $2,500 in addition to financial aid for accepted artists engaged in long-form journalism projects. Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a private studio, accommodations and three prepared meals a day for two weeks to two months. No residency fees. Financial assistance is available to nonfiction writers in residence based on need.

MBL Logan Science Journalism Program
The Logan Science Journalism Program at the Marine Biological Laboratory provides journalists with fellowships, enabling them to observe and participate in the scientific process by working closely with investigators carrying out research, and with graduate students learning the latest research methods. The interaction between journalists and scientists is a two-way street: The journalists gain a deeper familiarity with details of the science and the way scientists think and do their experiments, and conversely, the scientists learn the influences and constraints that shape the way science is reported to the public. Sharing the experience with journalists from other parts of the country (and the world) and other branches of the media is an additional program benefit. Staff or freelance broadcast or print journalists are eligible. A basic knowledge of biological principles is advantageous, but applicants with advanced degrees in biology or extensive laboratory training are not encouraged. All Fellows will participate in one of two intensive hands-on courses at MBL in Woods Hole, MA, May 13-23, 2024: Biomedical Research or Environmental Research. Fellowship support covers travel, room, board and course fees.

McCloy Fellowships on Global Trends
The American Council on Germany's McCloy Fellowships allow American and German experts from journalism (and other sectors) to research and assess the most pressing topics on the transatlantic agenda while engaging with their counterparts overseas, such as equity and social justice, urbanization, climate change and sustainability, digitalization, public health, as well as financial concerns such as inflation, trade and global supply chains. $7,000 stipend covers transatlantic airfare and domestic travel, as well as room and board, for a minimum of 21 days. American applicants need not be fluent in German, although some background in that language is helpful. German fellows visiting the United States should have a basic knowledge of English. McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism
The bi-yearly McGraw Fellowships provide experienced journalists with the funds and editorial support needed to report in-depth stories on critical issues related to U.S. business, finance and the economy. You needn't be a business reporter to apply. Many McGraw Fellows have been generalists, or cover other beats such as health care or the environment. No residency is required; McGraw Fellows work from their own offices. Open to freelance journalists, as well as staff reporters and editors working at a news organization. Five years professional journalism experience is needed. Fellows receive $5,000 a month for up to three months.
Deadlines: Mar 31 for Spring 2024; Oct 6 for Fall 2024. Time-sensitive projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis outside of the deadline periods.

The Mesa Refuge
Journalists, essayists, economists, screenwriters, naturalists, authors of memoirs, and other writers who need solitude essential to creative work may apply for a session at The Mesa Refuge, a two-week residency program for environmental writers, in Point Reyes Station, CA. Open to both experienced and emerging writers who are focused on “ideas at the edge” of nature, social justice and economic equity. Travel and food not included.

Metcalf Institute's Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists
Metcalf Institute's annual workshop takes place at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, a leading marine science research campus. The 26th annual workshop, June 3-8, 2024, is for full-time journalists to learn more about research and topics relating to climate change science, impacts, adaptation and justice.

Michelle Lang Fellowship
Early-career journalists can apply for this paid, virtual fellowship, dividing the year between working for the National Post and the Calgary newsroom of Postmedia, which produces the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun. Mongabay Special Reporting Initiatives Program
Mongabay's competitive fellowship program supports in-depth reporting on key environmental themes under a given topic. Environmental journalists worldwide can apply for a US $15,000 fellowship to cover specific environmental topics. Author of the top proposal will receive US$12,000 as an honorarium and up to US$3,000 for reporting, travel and research costs. The fellow will have two months for travel / research and two months for writing. He or she can work from anywhere in the world. Mongabay offers other opportunities as well, including an environmental news-writing internship.

National Humanities Center Fellowships
Fellowships (academic year or one semester) are awarded to scholars who have demonstrated achievement in the advanced post-doctoral study of history, languages and literature, and other fields of the humanities. The Center also accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. Scholars should be engaged in work significantly beyond the revision of a doctoral dissertation. A limited number of designated fellowships for scholarship concerning nature, environmental history or ecological concerns are usually available. Fellowship stipends are individually determined, the amount depending upon the needs of the Fellow and the Center's ability to meet them. The Center provides travel expenses for Fellows and their dependents to and from North Carolina.

National Science Foundation U.S. Antarctic Program
The National Science Foundation (NSF) runs the U.S. Program (USAP), which selects a limited number of professional journalists to report from Antarctica for approximately one working week annually, between early November and mid-December. Reporters or their employers pay for round-trip transportation to — and accommodation in — Christchurch, New Zealand. NSF provides housing, transportation, food and cold-weather clothing for journalists while they are in Antarctica. U.S. media receive preference in selection.

The National Science-Health-Environment Reporting Fellowships
The year-long fellowships are open to U.S.-based early-career journalists interested in covering any or all of the three fields. Fellows will participate in workshops and other events held at the annual Science Writers (October 2022), Environmental Journalism (April 2023) and Health Journalism (Spring 2023) conferences, as well as receive training, networking, mentoring, new sources and story ideas — while allowing them to stay at their jobs. Independent journalists will be eligible for project support stipends. A collaboration of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW), the Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) and the Society of Environmental Journalists.

The NTBG's five-day Environmental Journalism Program in Hawaii, May 12–18, 2024, provides specialized working journalists in broadcast, print and online media much-needed information about tropical ecosystems, providing deep background in tropical ecology to enhance the accuracy of reporting on science and environmental issues. The focus is immersion and not advocacy.

New America's Fellows Program
New America invests in thinkers — journalists, scholars, filmmakers, and public policy analysts — who generate big, bold ideas that have an impact and spark new conversations about the most pressing issues of our day. The New England First Amendment Coalition annually hosts this tuition-free investigative journalism program for 25 working journalists within New England. The James W. Foley Scholarship, honoring the slain journalist and New Hampshire native, provides funding for one fellow to attend the institute without travel or lodging expenses.

New Horizons Travel Fellowships
The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers Travel Fellowships, of up to $1,200 each, to cover the costs of attending the annual New Horizons in Science Briefing for Journalists/Science Writers meeting which brings together top-rank scientists and leading science writers for an in-depth look at seminal developments in science, medicine and technology that are likely to make news in the coming months. The fellowships are intended primarily for journalists from publications and broadcast outlets that do not routinely cover major science meetings or employ a full-time science writer. Freelancers with a demonstrated interest in science writing are also eligible. If requested, CASW will also assign a veteran science writer to each fellow to serve as mentor and to help ease his/her way through the program.

Nieman Fellowships for Journalists
The Nieman Foundation selects up to 12 U.S. and 12 International journalists for Nieman Fellowships each year. All fellows come to Harvard for two full semesters to pursue a course of study of their own design. Nearly every class at Harvard College and in the graduate schools is open to the fellows (and their spouses), who spend their nine-month appointment broadening their interests or deepening their insight into their field of specialization. Applicants must be full-time journalists with at least five years of journalistic experience. Open to full-time staff and freelance journalists who work in all media, including print, broadcast, photography, film and the web. All prospective fellows must speak, read and write English fluently. Fellowship includes stipend of $85,000 (U.S. only) plus housing, childcare and health insurance allowances. International fellows must make separate financial arrangements.

NPR Kroc Fellowship
This National Public Radio fellowship is a yearlong program designed to identify and develop the next generation of extraordinary public media journalists. Three fellows are selected each year and receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates, but previous journalism experience is not required. The fellowship begins each year around September and lasts 12 months. Fellows receive a stipend of more than $50,000 and benefits, including paid vacation.

NYU Arthur L. Carter Global Journalist Fellowship
This fellowship provides support to international journalists who enroll in one of nine graduate programs in journalism at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute (including Science, Health and Environmental Reporting). The 2024 fellowship covers tuition expenses and registration fees for two of the three or four semesters of the program. The fellow also receives a stipend of approximately $16,000 for each of the two semesters of the fellowship. Must have two years' experience and fluency in English and at least one other language.

ProPublica Fellowships
ProPublica offers a variety of fellowships throughout the year, ranging anywhere from three months to a year. All of them are paid positions. Some of these fellowships are offered only occasionally, others are recurring. One aim is to bring journalists from a broad array of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds into journalism, including African Americans, Latinos, other people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. ProPublica is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply. The September-June Emerging Reporters Program provides a $4,500 stipend per semester, plus mentoring and trips to investigative journalism conferences, to five minority students who work or want to work at college journalism outlets — newspapers, websites, radio stations or TV stations.

Religion & Environment Story Project (RESP) Fellowship
The RESP Fellowship supports journalists, editors and public-facing academics who are producing — or want to learn how to produce — stories at the intersection of religion and the environment. A cohort of ten fellows will gather twice over the course of six months for practical, on-the-job training designed to develop new ways of thinking about the climate crisis and the role played by religious individuals and institutions in addressing (and ignoring) it. Participants will meet with working journalists and scholars in a collaborative seminar environment that will include wide ranging discussions on religion, spirituality, the environment, climate change and journalism. Includes travel, food and lodging for both workshops; a year's membership for the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) or the Religion News Association (RNA); registration fees for either the SEJ or RNA annual conference; and a stipend of $1,000 after completing the program and committing to produce at least one story for a general audience.

This one-year fellowship was created to reflect the importance that the late Jim Travers attached to his years reporting for Southam News from Africa and the Middle East and the guidance he provided as an editor for journalists. The fellowship finances a significant foreign reporting project by a Canadian journalist or non-Canadian with valid work permit (staffer, freelancer or graduate student) working in any medium. The annual Donald W. The Radio Television Digital News Foundation offers scholarships for outstanding students and fellowships for young professionals (<10 years experience in the field) pursuing careers in radio, television, or online news. Both the Michelle Clark Fellowship and N.S. Bienstock Fellowship are given to promising minority applicants. Jacque I. Minnotte Health Reporting Fellowship is awarded to a television or radio reporter or producer for excellent health or medical coverage. The Vada and Col. This six-month paid fellowship offers early-career journalists experience in magazine publishing, with an emphasis on writing and reporting, fact-checking, research and story cultivation. Alums have gone on to work for Mother Jones, Nat Geo, AZ Republic and NPR, among other outlets.

Taylor/Blakeslee University Fellowships
The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) annually awards fellowships to both professional journalists and students of outstanding ability who have been accepted for enrollment in U.S. graduate-level science writing programs to help defray the cost of tuition and other program-related expenses. The fellowship honors the memory of Rennie Taylor, a science writer for Associated Press, whose estate provided funds for the establishment of the American Tentative Society, and Alton Blakeslee, former science editor of AP, who served as ATS's longtime president. Awards of $6,000 are available to fellows selected on the basis of a national competition. Science writing is defined as writing about science, medicine, health, technology and the environment for the general public via the mass media.

Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder
Deepen your understanding of environmental science and policy, and enhance your journalism skills at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Open to U.S. journalists (reporters, editors, producers and freelancers) working in print or broadcast with a minimum of five years' full-time experience. Prior experience covering the environment is not necessary. Fellows will take classes, attend special seminars, take field trips, and engage in independent study at a university renowned for its environmental science and policy studies. The program provides a $80,000 stipend. It also covers tuition and fees, paid sick leave, bus passes for use locally and regionally, and attendance at the annual SEJ and NASW conferences.

UC Berkeley-11th Hour Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship
UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism annually offers multiple $10,000 postgraduate Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships in a program established by Michael Pollan, the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley. The fellowship, a project of the Knight Center in Science and Environmental Journalism, is supported by a grant from The 11th Hour Project, a program of The Schmidt Family Foundation. Aimed at early and mid-career journalists, the Fellowship presents an opportunity to report ambitious longform stories on the full range of subjects under the rubric of food systems: agricultural and nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, technology and culture, rural and urban farming, agriculture and the environment (including climate change), global trade and supply chains, consolidation and securitization of the food system and public health as it relates to food and farming. Preference given to U.S. focused stories, but international stories with a U.S. angle or connection will be considered.

The Uproot Project Environmental Justice Fellowship

The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism's National Health Journalism Fellowship is open to print, broadcast and multimedia journalists  (staffers or freelancers) around the country. The Fellowship is not only for health reporters, but for all reporters with an interest in social issues, whether they're education, government, environment, criminal justice, social services or immigration specialists or general assignment reporters. Also offered is a California fellowship program (in Los Angeles) providing interactive workshops and discussions on California health challenges and solutions. Both fellowships include reporting grants of $2,000-$10,000 and five months of mentoring by veteran journalists. Preference given to reporters pursuing collaborative projects between mainstream and ethnic news outlets.

Vermont Law and Graduate School's Summer Media Fellowships
VLGS's Environmental Law Center offers a comprehensive curriculum of environmental and animal law courses. The 2024 Summer Media Fellowships include a free two-week course in the environmental, food/ag or animal law topic of your choice, a stipend, free housing, free books, a tuition waiver and plenty of access to faculty. Family members are welcome. Summer Session courses offered vary year to year. All courses are taught by national and international experts in their fields. Media fellows also take part in the summer session's brown bag lunch series, and deliver a 45-minute, informal lecture on an environmental, food and agriculture, or animal law and policy topic of their choosing.

WHOI Ocean Science Journalism Fellowship Program
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Ocean Science Journalism Fellowship Program takes place each fall and introduces science communicators to the interdisciplinary and wide-ranging fields of oceanography and ocean engineering. Through seminars, laboratory visits, and brief field expeditions, Ocean Science Journalism Fellows gain access to new research findings and to fundamental background information in engineering, marine biology, geology and geophysics, marine chemistry and geochemistry, and physical oceanography. The program is a one-week, residential experience open to professional science writers, producers, and editors working for print, broadcast, radio, and Internet media. The ideal candidates will have at least two years of writing, producing, or editing experience for a general-interest audience. Fellows receive a travel allowance, as well as room and board for one week.
