"KINGMAN ISLAND, D.C. — Here come the inside-the-Beltway bats, some scarred survivors of an insidious disease.
On a man-made island in the often-forgotten Anacostia River one evening last week, train rumbles and an occasional copter overhead shout city, but the wooded island feels a world apart.
It feels like: habitat.
For the big brown bat, silver-haired bat and several other species, Kingman Island and nearby Heritage Island provide a mostly restful home within a metropolitan area. Last Thursday evening, about 20 people showed up to check on the critters."
