"Great Lakes: Army Corps 'Gauntlet' Aims To Halt Spread Of Asian Carp"

"The best way to keep invasive Asian carp from entering and wreaking havoc on the Great Lakes would involve a series of water jets, flushing locks and electrical barriers on the Illinois River, according to a long-delayed Army Corps of Engineers report out today.

The overdue draft feasibility study tentatively selected a plan for the Brandon Road Lock and Dam that includes nonstructural measures, complex noise, boat launches and more, with the goal to 'optimize alternative effectiveness while minimizing safety impacts,' according to the Army Corps.

The 488-page draft report revolves around the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, Ill., which serves as a choke point in the Illinois River system. The study looks at a variety of ways to keep the Asian carp from traveling upstream to enter Lake Michigan, including water cannons, noise obstacles and electrical barriers."
