"Two environmental organizations filed a federal lawsuit in Pittsburgh Monday alleging that U.S. Steel Corp.’s illegal operation of its three Mon Valley facilities following a Dec. 24, 2018 fire, that knocked out pollution controls at its Clairton Coke Works, damaged the health of nearby residents.
The lawsuit, filed by PennEnvironment and the Clean Air Council, charges the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker violated the federal Clean Air Act by continuing to operate the coke works and its Edgar Thomson and Irvin steel mills in Braddock and West Mifflin without adequately controlling emissions of sulfur dioxide and other coke oven gases.
The Edgar Thomson and Irvin steel mills are connected to the Clairton facility and continued to burn and flare unfiltered coke oven gases, including benzene, a carcinogen."
