"New York Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman joined progressive activists for a protest outside the White House on Monday to demand that President Biden’s infrastructure plan prioritizes the fight against climate change, signaling he could run into resistance from members of his own party as he focuses on passing a bipartisan bill through Congress.
Organized by the left-wing Sunrise Movement, protesters gathered for the sit-in-style action near the White House to push for Biden’s infrastructure bill to create a Civilian Climate Corps, a federal entity that would focus on job creation in renewable energy sectors and other green industries.
“They want you to think, ‘Oh, this is a new idea, this is too ambitious, this is too crazy.’ How about this? The last time we introduced the Civilian Climate Corps in this country, we hired and mobilized a quarter-million people in three months,” Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd, referring to the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps."
