Knight Science Journalism at MIT Project Fellowships
Due to continued logistical and safety issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Knight Science Journalism Program will not host an in-person fellowship program in the 2021-22 academic year but will again offer up to 20 remote project fellowships. This is considered a transitional approach and in the 2022-23 academic year, KSJ expects to return to its traditional programming.
This is the second year of the Knight Science Journalism at MIT Project Fellowships, a remote KSJ program. In keeping with its core mission of supporting science journalism, the program will offer a range of support to working journalists during the academic year. These fellowships, open to U.S. residents only (freelancers or staffers), are designed to support independently conceived projects — books, investigations, documentaries — and they will be awarded for varying durations over the course of the academic year, beginning in September and ending in May.
Candidates will be asked to apply for one of three forms of fellowship support:
- A nine-month, $40,000 fellowship running from September 2021 thru May 2022
- A four-and-a-half-month, $20,000 fellowship running from September 2021 thru mid-January 2022.
- A four-and-a-half-month, $20,000 fellowship running from mid-January 2022 thru May 2022.
There is no requirement for project fellows to be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where MIT is located. Fellows may choose the appropriate location for their work. But each fellowship will grant awardees remote access to MIT’s university libraries and their vast trove of journal and database materials. And all appointments will include up to $5,000 in additional support for research-related expenses, such as travel or equipment during the period of the fellowship.
Applications for the 2021-22 KSJ fellowships will be accepted from May 10 through June 6, 2021.
