Freeflow Institute's Winter Workshop Series: #2 Stookesberry
Freeflow Institute is proud to offer our first-ever three-part Winter Workshop Series: three intensive workshops on conservation and creative communication in the evolving West. Three diverse perspectives, three unique locations, three opportunities to grow your community and hone your storytelling skills.
We'd like to invite you to join this diverse cohort of innovative minds. Journalists, artists, writers, students, faculty, communicators, and professionals in any field are welcome to join the series. Enrollment is limited to 12 participants, as we want to keep the cohort small, and acceptance is based on the order in which applications are received (first come, first served). Tuition includes overnight accomodation and meals.
WINTER WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR LINE-UP
1. ALEXIS BONOGOFSKY + RONAN DONOVAN / 29 Feb – 1 Mar, 2020 at Yellowstone Forever Institute, Gardiner, MT
“Story as light, story as glue, sorry as web: telling compelling stories for conservation”
Alexis Bonogofksy is a fourth-generation Montana rancher, writer, photographer, and organizer; Ronan Donovan is an award-winning National Geographic photographer and filmmaker. Alexis and Ronan will discuss how effective storytelling can build empathy and shift societal narratives around conservation issues, how shared values that can tie unlikely communities together, and how to craft stories around those values.
2. BEN STOOKESBERRY / 28 – 29 Mar, 2020 (location TBA)
“Breaking down walls of perception: river exploration as an act of immersive learning”
Ben Stookesberry – award-winning filmmaker, expedition kayaker, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year – will offer perspective and lessons from traveling the world in search of rivers. As one of the world's preeminent expedition kayakers, Stookesberry will talk about adventuring and exploration as mechanisms for effecting change or cultivating awareness of global social and ecological issues.
3. CHRIS LA TRAY / 25 – 26 Apr, 2020 at Swan Valley Connections, Condon, MT
“Going simple, going solo, going now: unplug, get quiet, and find ‘big W’ Wild in ‘small w’ wild places”
Missoula-based writer, winner of the 2018 Montana Book Award, and enrolled member of the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Chris La Tray will present ideas related to disconnecting from the wired world as a means to reconnect more deeply with the analog one; journaling as a necessary component of not just a writing life, but a contemplative one; and developing tools for effective, beyond-the-visual observation.
If you'd like to register for the series, please submit this electronic application.
