DEADLINE: Investigative Journalism Workshop on Climate Change With Glòria Pallarès
The Gabo Foundation, in alliance with the Open Climate Reporting Initiative (OCRI) of the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) of the United Kingdom, invites applications for the workshop 'Investigative journalism on climate change' (information is available in English, Espanol and Português), which will be conducted by Glòria Pallarès (Spain), and will be held in person in Mexico City, from Wednesday, August 31 to Friday, September 2, 2022.

Through this three-day face-to-face workshop, resources and tools will be offered that allow journalists to strengthen their capacities with a view to incorporating investigative journalism techniques into the coverage of climate change, bearing in mind that it is a phenomenon that It marks our times, affects people's daily lives and cuts across all spheres, from politics, economics and society, to culture and sports, to mention just a few.
This training activity seeks to give keys on how to guide journalistic investigations on the impact of corruption on climate issues, based on the understanding of fundamental issues on the matter such as international agreements, financing and governance, as well as the actors, sectors and interests involved.
Likewise, the workshop will reveal some digital tools that facilitate further research on climate change, as well as the exploration and access to databases and specialized sources on the subject.
Glòria Pallarès is a freelance journalist focused on the environment and global development. She has published in media such as El País, Mongabay and Devex. Her work in the Congo Basin, supported by the Pulitzer Center, has exposed cases of illegal logging and mining and weaknesses in the governance of carbon projects in a total area equivalent to the size of Costa Rica.
In the last decade, she has taught trainings for African environmental media and for international students of journalism and global governance. She has also written for United Nations (UN) initiatives, international think tanks and think tanks on both sides of the Atlantic, and has worked as a data analyst in South Sudan.
Glòria works in five languages and has a background in Biotechnology (BSc) and Biodiversity Conservation (MSc) and Journalism (BSc).
Participants
For this workshop, 14 reporters and/or editors who cover environmental and/or climate change issues in any Spanish-speaking country in Latin America will be selected through a public call, regardless of the journalistic format in which they work: radio, internet, television or press. written or other
The selected people must be available to attend each of the workshop sessions in person.
Timeline
- Call opening: Friday, July 8, 2022
- Closing of the call: Monday, August 1, 2022, at midnight (Colombian time).
- Publication of selected: Friday, August 12, 2022
- Workshop dates: Wednesday, August 31, Thursday, September 1 and Friday, September 2, 2022.
- Hours of each of the workshop sessions: from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (Mexico City time)
The people who are selected for this workshop must pay a cost of 100 USD (one hundred United States dollars) for registration. The payment of the mentioned value must be made through bank transfer or electronic payment after being notified as selected.
It is worth mentioning that thanks to the alliance with the Open Climate Reporting Initiative (OCRI) of the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJ), this workshop has the following support:
- Accommodation in individual accommodation for 4 nights for journalists who do not live in Mexico City.
- Air tickets (round trip). It does not apply to journalists who live in Mexico City.
- Food during the days of the activity.
- International health insurance.
